Estrogen And Men’s Health
Estrogen has been known as the primary hormone of women that includes three majors called estrone, estriol and estradiol. In general, estrogen is responsible for the regulation and the development of females’ secondary sex characteristics and reproductive system. However, estrogen is also found in all men.
In fact, the scientists proved that this hormone plays an important role in men’s health. At many points, the knowledge of estrogen levels in blood could help people explain and treat many diseases related to age and reproduction for both men and women. For example, anti-estrogen drugs such as clomiphene citrate and tamoxifen have been used to treat the infertility in men.
As all hormones, estrogen must be kept in balance not only in women but also in men. For men, the levels of estrogen tend to increase during the aging process while the levels of testosterone are decreased. This leads to hormone imbalance causing many diseases for men. It is quite easy to recognize the excess of estrogen in aging men through observing the changes of the body such as the development of breasts, fluctuations of emotion or even feeling tired frequently.
Men with a high level of estrogen could have more risks of stroke and some coronary artery diseases. In addition, men with higher blood estrogen levels have a higher risk of benign prostate enlargement or prostate cancer. However, men should not reduce the level of estrogen too low because they need estrogen for other activities inside the body. For example, estrogen could help maintain bone density and the cognitive function.
Some people suggest that a diet with estrogen- blocking food could contribute to control the level of estrogen in blood. Actually, food could be considered as medicine. Men are recommended to eat cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, collard greens, turnips, kale, cauliflower etc. These vegetables contain a high level of phytochemicals to block the process of estrogen production. Besides that, red grape, mushrooms seeds or green tea are also effective in blocking the estrogen production and good for health.
Mushrooms are able to prevent the production of aromatase that is responsible for converting androgen to estrogen. Like the cruciferous vegetables, red grape could work to block estrogen production. Green tea is seen as the best drink for all ages. Besides reducing estrogen, green tea is deemed to decrease the risk of some cancer and heart diseases. If the level of estrogen in the body is out of control, too low or too high, and these nutrients are not strong enough to reduce the estrogen level, he person they consult the doctor to prescribe an aromatase-inhibiting drug.
Thus, estrogen should be kept in balance in order not to cause any risk of diseases for both men and women.
